Half Magic

Half Magic
By:Edward Eager
Published on 1999-03-31 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

It all begins with a strange coin on a sun-warmed sidewalk. Jane finds the coin, and becasue she and her sblings are having the worst, most dreadfully boring summer ever, she idly wishes something exciting would happen. And something does: Her wish is granted. Or not quite. Only half of her wish comes true. It turns out the coin grants wishes—but only by half, so that you must wish for twice as much as you want. Wishing for two times some things is a cinch, but other doubled wishes only cause twice as much trouble. What is half of twice a talking cat? Or to be half-again twice not-here? And how do you double your most heartfelt wish, the one you care about so much it has to be perfect?

FRANKENSTEIN (The Original 1818 Edition)

FRANKENSTEIN (The Original 1818 Edition)
By:Mary Shelley
Published on 2017-12-06 by Musaicum Books

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a creature produced by an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was nineteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. The original 1818 'Uncensored' Edition of Frankenstein as first published anonymously in 1818. This original version is much more true to the spirit of the author's original intentions than the heavily revised 1831 edition, edited by Shelley, in part, because of pressure to make the story more conservative. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text to the more common 1831 edition. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus.

Young, Restless, No Longer Reformed

Young, Restless, No Longer Reformed
By:Austin Fischer
Published on 2014-01-13 by Wipf and Stock Publishers

Does it really matter? Does it matter if we have free will? Does it matter if Calvinism is true? And does what you think about it matter? No and yes. No, it doesn't matter because God is who he is and does what he does regardless of what we think of him, just as the solar system keeps spinning around the sun even if we're convinced it spins around the earth. Our opinions about God will not change God, but they can change us. And so yes, it does matter because the conversations about free will and Calvinism confront us with perhaps the only question that really matters: who is God? This is a book about that question--a book about the Bible, black holes, love, sovereignty, hell, Romans 9, Jonathan Edwards, John Piper, C. S. Lewis, Karl Barth, and a little girl in a red coat. You've heard arguments, but here's a story--Austin Fischer's story, and his journey in and out of Calvinism on a trip to the center of the universe.

C.S. Lewis and His Circle

C.S. Lewis and His Circle
By:Roger White
Published on 2015 by Oxford University Press, USA

For over thirty years, the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society has met weekly in the medieval colleges of the University of Oxford. During that time, it has hosted as speakers nearly all those still living who were associated with the Inklings-the Oxford literary circle led by C. S. Lewis--as well as authors and thinkers of a prominence that nears Lewis's own. C. S. Lewis and His Circle offers the reader a chance to join this unique group. Roger White has worked with Society past presidents Brendan and Judith Wolfe to select the most important talks, which are here made available to the wider public for the first time. They exemplify the best of traditional academic essays, thoughtful memoirs, and informal reminiscences about C. S. Lewis and his circle. The reader will reimagine Lewis's Cosmic Trilogy with former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, read philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe's final word on Lewis's arguments for Christianity, hear the Reverend Peter Bide's memories of marrying Lewis and Joy Davidman in an Oxford hospital, and learn about Lewis's Narnia Chronicles from his former secretary. Representing the finest of both personal and scholarly engagement with C. S. Lewis and the Inklings, the talks collected here set a new tone for engagement with this iconic Oxford literary circle--a tone close to Lewis's own Oxford--bred sharpness and wryness, seasoned with good humor and genuine affection for C. S. Lewis and his circle.

Eunice

Eunice
By:Eileen McNamara
Published on 2018-04-03 by Simon and Schuster

In this “revelation” of a biography (USA TODAY), a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist examines the life and times of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, arguing she left behind the Kennedy family’s most profound political legacy. While Joe Kennedy was grooming his sons for the White House and the Senate, his Stanford-educated daughter, Eunice, was hijacking her father’s fortune and her brothers’ political power to engineer one of the great civil rights movements of our time on behalf of millions of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Her compassion was born of rage: at the medical establishment that had no answers for her sister Rosemary, at her revered but dismissive father, whose vision for his family did not extend beyond his sons, and at a government that failed to deliver on America’s promise of equality. Now, in this “fascinating” (the Today show), “nuanced” (The Boston Globe) biography, “ace reporter and artful storyteller” (Pulitzer Prize–winning author Megan Marshall) Eileen McNamara finally brings Eunice Kennedy Shriver out from her brothers’ shadow. Granted access to never-before-seen private papers, including the scrapbooks Eunice kept as a schoolgirl in prewar London, McNamara paints an extraordinary portrait of a woman both ahead of her time and out of step with it: the visionary founder of Special Olympics, a devout Catholic in a secular age, and an officious, cigar-smoking, indefatigable woman whose impact on American society was longer lasting than that of any of the Kennedy men.

Sharyn Hakken

Sharyn Hakken
By:Gwendolyn Olmsted
Published on 2014-09-14 by CreateSpace

Joshua and Sharyn Hauser Hakkens lead the ideal life in Tampa, Florida. They were both environmental engineers, Joshua at Hahn Engineering, Incorporated; and Sharyn at Hanecki Consulting Engineers, Incorporated, where she worked from 2001 through 2011, both located in downtown Tampa. They were both smaller engineering companies with way under fifty employees, but then Joshua only had professional engineering training through his failed attempt at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that lasted.......about two years; and Sharyn, although had both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Environmental and Geophysical Sciences, it was obtained at the very non-competitive University of South Florida, located in Tampa, too, no less. They even bought a fixer-upper ranch style house in Tampa, near where both of them worked. Shortly after the birth of their two children, Chase, and Cole, something very dreadful happened. With increased illegal drug usage, because of more time on both of their hands, paranoia stemming from Joshua's failed military career began to consume their lives. Poor Sharyn, literally, was forced to make a decision: Move in with her parents, Patricia and Bob Hauser; her brother, Robert Hauser, III, was a States Attorney with Pinellas County, assigned specifically to child custody cases, and her sister-in-law, Anna Patton Hauser was a case manager for the Guardian ad Litum program, in the same county, so she had her ammunition in tow; or follow her husband Josh's Armageddon Ideologies, with suppressed anger at the United States Air Force for raping him, |more times than he could possibly count,| into oblivion. Sharyn, maybe resentful that her brother Rob, the big state's attorney, who always was her family's favorite, chose the path of insanity that trekked toward a downward spiral taking her to far off Louisiana, that would eventually end, in even further, Havana, Cuba, of all places, because you see Cuba helped any American on the run from United States Federal paranoia every day of the week, or so Josh thought. Sharyn Hakken: I Love you to Insanity is the unauthorized biography of one woman's struggle with the decision she made to choose love over the safety and welfare of her own children, and the catastrophic consequences that occurred, as a result of that dreadful choice she made in a negative-three-star hotel room in June 2012, in Slidell, Louisiana, culminating in her own parents' living room, on April 3rd, 2013, that resulted in her eventual arrest and extradition from Havana, Cuba, back to the United States, shortly after, on April 10th 2013.
